Everything operated flawlessly on the day of installation, but after a week or two you notice that the door sticks slightly, becomes harder to close, or the multi-point locking system no longer operates as smoothly.

It’s understandable that this may raise concerns. However, with modern, heavy-duty exterior door systems, this is almost never an installation defect. Instead, it is a natural physical settling process that occurs as high-performance, energy-efficient door systems adapt to their operating environment.

What Is Door Settling?

A modern exterior door is a sophisticated system consisting of the door profile, steel reinforcement, weather seals, and high-performance insulated glazing. To ensure maximum thermal insulation, weather resistance, and security, the fit between the door and the frame must be accurate to within millimetres.

Because our doors are engineered for an exceptionally tight seal, even the smallest movement can become noticeable. This is known as the door settling process—the natural adjustment that occurs as the heavy door system reaches its final position after installation and regular use.

Gravity and Thermal Expansion

There are two primary reasons why a new exterior door may require a minor adjustment after installation.

• Gravity: A premium entrance door fitted with HR+++ triple glazing can easily weigh between 90 and 110 kg. The hinges remain under constant load, and during the first 2 to 4 weeks, the door naturally settles under its own weight. As a result, the pivot point may shift by a fraction of a millimetre.
• Thermal Expansion (Bimetal Effect): Exterior doors are exposed to significant temperature differences between the inside and outside of the home. This is especially noticeable with darker colours, such as anthracite, where direct sunlight can cause the outer profile to expand while the inside remains cooler. This may result in a slight, temporary movement of the door. This is a normal characteristic of high-quality materials and modern insulated door systems.

When Is It Actually a Problem?

Natural settling is completely normal. However, there are situations where professional attention is required.

Normal Door Settling (No Need to Worry):

• The door lightly touches the strike plate or threshold when closing.
• The handle requires slightly more force to engage the multi-point locking system.
• The issue develops gradually after 1–3 weeks of normal use.

• The door does not close properly or sticks from the very first day after installation.
• Visible gaps appear around the door, allowing noticeable drafts.
• There is visible damage to the hinges, locking system, or other door hardware.

What Can You Do Yourself?

While our installation specialists will carry out the final adjustment if necessary, here are a few things you can do in the meantime.

• Don’t Force the Door: Never slam or force a sticking door closed. Doing so may permanently damage the SKG-certified multi-point locking system or the weather seals.
• Check the Threshold: Make sure there is no dirt, debris, or small stones blocking the threshold or preventing the door from closing properly.
• Allow Time for the Door to Settle: During the first few weeks after installation, allow the door sufficient time to stabilise before requesting a final adjustment.

⚠️ Important: Never attempt to adjust the 3D hinges yourself using an Allen key. Incorrect adjustments may cause the door to become misaligned, reduce its burglary resistance, and void your 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.
